Patty Melts with Secret Sauce

A glorious fusion of a juicy burger and a delectable grilled cheese, served with a secret sauce that enhances flavor.

  • 1 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 12 slices sourdough bread
  • 1/2 cup secret sauce
  • 3 medium Vidalia onions, thinly sliced
  • 6 slices Cheddar cheese
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Secret Sauce Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 tsp hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, and hot sauce. Mix well until it’s nice and creamy. Set aside.
  2. Season the Beef: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, and black pepper. Gently mix until just combined.
  3. Form the Patties: Divide the meat mixture into 6 equal portions and shape them into patties that are slightly larger than your bread slices.
  4. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and add the thinly sliced Vidalia onions. Cook for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Cook the Patties: Remove the onions, add another tablespoon of butter to the skillet, increase heat to medium-high, and cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side.
  6. Toast the Bread: Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread, place half of the slices in the skillet, spread with secret sauce, and toast until golden.
  7. Assemble the Patty Melts: On each slice with secret sauce, layer a patty, a spoonful of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheddar cheese.
  8. Grill the Melts: Grill the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and the cheese is melty.
  9. Slice and Serve: Remove from skillet, slice diagonally, and serve with extra secret sauce for dipping.

Notes

For a vegetarian option, use a black bean or chickpea patty. This recipe is versatile; add jalapeños or mushrooms for variations.
