Creamy Kohlrabi Gratin with Cheese

A cozy and comforting dish featuring kohlrabi layered with a creamy cheese sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg Kohlrabi
  • 200 ml Heavy Cream
  • 150 ml Milk
  • 150 grams Grated Cheese (e.g., Gouda or Emmental)
  • 1 Small Onion
  • 1 Garlic Clove
  • 1 Tablespoon Butter
  • 1 Tablespoon Flour
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Nutmeg
  • Optional: Breadcrumbs for Topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Peel the kohlrabi and slice it thinly.
  3. Sauté the chopped onion in melted butter until soft.
  4. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the sautéed onions and garlic, stir for a minute.
  6. Pour in the heavy cream and milk, stirring until thickened.
  7. Layer half of the kohlrabi, pour half of the sauce, and sprinkle half of the cheese in a baking dish. Repeat.
  8. Add breadcrumbs on top if desired.
  9. Bake covered for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  10. Let it sit for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

This dish can be prepared ahead of time. Just cover and refrigerate before baking.
